For perspective, the National Retail Federation (NRF) estimates that families with children in kindergarten through 12th grade are expected spend $688.62 on average for back to school items this year, up over $80 from average spending last year. This brings the total estimated spending for Back-to-School to $30.3 Billion in 2012.
NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay told several media outlets, “This is not discretionary, this is really mandatory. Parents are going to do whatever they need to do.” With such a big opportunity at hand, retailers are stepping up their marketing and merchandising efforts online and in stores.
